World Wrestling Championships World Wrestling Championships The World Wrestling Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, scheduled for September 16 to 24, 2023, will not only be a platform for wrestlers to compete for victory and recognition but also an opportunity to secure 90 quotas. These quotas are highly sought after as they guarantee a spot at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Out of the contenders, a group of 30 Indian wrestlers has been chosen to represent their country at the Wrestling Championships in Belgrade.
World Wrestling Championships Schedule 2023
The World Wrestling Championships 2023, the first qualifying event in the sport for next year’s Paris 2024 Olympics, will get underway in Belgrade, Serbia, from Friday. It will conclude on September 24. The 30 medal events at the World Wrestling Championships 2023 – 10 in Greco-Roman and 10 each in men’s freestyle and women’s freestyle – will see one Indian wrestler each in every category.
A total of 90 quotas – five for each of the 18 Olympic weight categories – will be up for grabs at the World Wrestling Championships. In each of these categories, the four medallists (gold, silver and two bronze) will each obtain one quota place for their respective NOCs. A bout between the two bronze medal match losers will take place and the winner will obtain the fifth quota.
United World Wrestling (UWW)
Indian wrestlers will compete under the United World Wrestling (UWW) flag as the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) stands provisionally suspended for not conducting elections on time.
Antim Panghal will be looking to become the first Indian woman wrestler to win a gold medal at the world championships. The 19-year-old wrestler became the first Indian woman to become a two-time U-20 world champion in Amman last month. She will continue to compete in the 53kg.
Sushil Kumar’s men’s 66kg freestyle triumph at the 2010 world championships in Moscow is still India’s only gold medal at the senior World Wrestling Championships. Sarita Mor, a 2021 world championships bronze medallist, will compete in the women’s 57kg event. Antim Kundu, an U-20 World Championships silver medallist in women’s 65kg, will also participate in Belgrade.
Two-time world championships
Sakshi Malik, the Rio 2016 bronze medallist and two-time world championships bronze medallist Vinesh Phogat will not compete in Belgrade. Among other big names missing will be Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Bajrang Punia, who has four world championship medals to his name, and Ravi Kumar Dahiya, the Tokyo 2020 silver medallist. Aman Sehrawat, a 2022 U23 world champion and the reigning Asian champion, will compete in the men’s 57kg.
